Pakistan's parliament elected opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif as president

Only opposition parties participated in the vote because shortly before it, deputies from the ruling Pakistan Justice Party, led by the ousted Imran Khan, had decided to collectively resign.

On Sunday after the vote, hundreds of thousands of Khan's supporters marched across Pakistan to protest his ouster, waving party flags, with young people forming the core of the protesters.
